Where's The Love Shack Gone?
by Ivor Littlejohn

It was a sad day during January that Barrow Borough Council pulled down Askam's monument to love (the public conveniences at the bottom of Duddon Road).
This well known and loved site has been used for many years by the youth of Askam as a meeting place, courting site and general planning office. When asked why the council would pull down such a beautiful site of heritage the response was that due to rising costs of recycling latex the monument was no longer a viable recreation area.
One local youth said that although the loss of the monument was sad the local teenagers had now found a new emergency meeting place - The old bus shelter opposite the Co-op and in fact this was prooving to be more comfy as it had benches and you dont have to climb on the roof to get a bit of Privacy!

Note from Editor
It is always sad to see these historically important buildings being brought down, and I'm sure that one day the bus stop will also dissappear. However do not despair I believe there will always be a nook and cranny to squeeze into.
